1st Generation Artificial Grass
Artificial grass was first used in the 1960s when it was used in the newly built Astrodome (Texas, USA). This artificial grass used was called the first generation of artificial grass. This special product used was developed by the Monsanto company and the name that characterizes the product was named after that brand with the brand name “AstroTurf”. Even though it was not produced by Monsanto, the AstroTurf registered trademark remained the name that qualified artificial grass until the late 20th century. First-generation artificial grass systems (consisted of unfilled and short pile products) of the 1960s were replaced by second generation artificial grass systems.
2nd Generation Artificial Grass
This was due to the fact that the first generation of artificial turf did not meet enough expectations in terms of use. As you all know, artificial grass is an alternative to natural grass and should be better than natural grass. Since the first-generation artificial turf did not fully deliver what was expected, a second-generation artificial turf was produced.
In the 1980s, systems consisting of polypropylene yarns met the consumer as second generation artificial grass.
These artificial grass carpets, 25mm-40mm pile height, were used only with sand filling and were a bit stiff and unusable for the football games. Because of the hard ground speeding up the game, serious injuries could not be prevented. As you know, football was a hard game and fast movements caused many injuries.
Therefore, second-generation artificial turf could not meet exactly what was expected. Today, the second generation of artificial grass is still preferred for some low-budget sports fields. However, second-generation artificial turf was more efficient in sports such as tennis instead of football.
3rd Generation Artificial Grass
So; what is this 3G artificial grass?
And finally, the 3rd Generation artificial grass was launched at the beginning of the 21st century and it responded to the demand of consumers. 3G artificial turf is a surface obtained using sand and rubber. And with the materials used in production, it was presented to the carpet field owners by taking the title of the grass closest to natural grass.
It has become the closest product to natural grass for many positive reasons. It was a great opportunity to bring a good standard to the pitch.
In the following years, a quality concept was launched by FIFA in February 2001. UEFA has announced that it allows organizing competitions on artificial turf surfaces approved in the 2005-2006 season. Of course, FIFA approved 3G artificial turf is produced using very high-quality monofilament yarns and its service life is very long.
